NVC includes eye-gaze, facial expression, posture, gesture, body torque, interpersonal distance, as well as pauses and gasps. It adds meaning and context to verbal communication. It is important in understanding emotion and intent, and in managing conversations and relationships.

A synthetic human can represent a person in another location or an AI, be implemented in either a computer graphic or robotic form, and offer potentially engaging and authentic interaction. While generative AI chatbots and video conferencing promote human-like interaction, partial Non-Verbal Communication (NVC) can detract from the experience and change the outcome of a conversation.

NVC can, but need not, accompany verbal communication. Unlike verbal communication, it is inherently spatial. This is helpful in gauging attention. Its spatial information is more accurately communicated through 3D mediums and interfaces.
